Geely Starray EM-i Extreme Crash Test Exceeds Euro NCAP Standards
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Chinese automaker Geely Auto has once again demonstrated its prowess in vehicle safety innovation. This time, the company went beyond standard regulations by conducting a unique extreme crash test in France, as reported by Global.geely.com on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. The test took place at UTAC facilities accredited by Euro NCAP, which combined two fatal scenarios: a side impact followed immediately by a pole impact.
A deformable barrier moving at 60 km/h struck the Geely SUV’s body. The force of the side impact caused the vehicle to recoil and collide with a rigid pole placed on the opposite side. The Geely Starray EM-i model was the test subject, and according to the manufacturer, it passed the test with flying colours. The cabin structure remained intact with no severe deflection that could trap occupants, and safety features such as airbags deployed as planned. The eCall emergency system activated instantly, and door locks automatically released post-collision to aid evacuation. Crucially, the battery components, vital in electric vehicles, were safely protected with no signs of leakage or fire.
The spectacular demonstration was showcased live at the conference titled ‘Globalization and Automotive Safety Technology Innovation in the Smart Driving Era’, jointly organised by the China Automotive Engineering Research Institute and UTAC. Notably, Geely’s crash test was the only live demonstration presented during the event. Geely is known for aggressively pursuing global safety ratings, with its products consistently achieving five-star ratings from Euro NCAP and ANCAP (Australia). Beyond showcasing technology, the Chinese automotive giant has also shown openness in safety innovation by pledging to share selected patents with the public, including emergency glass-breakers and underbody battery protection systems.
