Freeport's environment plans
JAKARTA (JP): PT Freeport Indonesia Company announced that its
environmental management plan and environmental monitoring plan
have been approved by the government.
The approval, which was issued by Minister of Mines and Energy
I.B. Sudjana on Feb. 17, was based on a recommendation of the
ministry's commission for environment impact analysis after
having conducted on-the-spot checking on the environment in its
mining area, field trips to the job site and villagers in Irian
Jaya, as well as examinations of its documents, the company said.
In a statement made available yesterday the company said that
the plans outline long-term tailing management and monitoring
activities based on input from many government agencies including
the ministries of forestry, mines and energy, and public works,
as well as the local administration.
The U.S.-Indonesian joint venture now holds a mining
concession, called Block A, at a 10,000 hectare area and Block B,
at 2.6 million hectares in size, located in Irian Jaya. (fhp)
