Freeport's environment plans<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): PT Freeport Indonesia Company announced that its
\nenvironmental management plan and environmental monitoring plan
\nhave been approved by the government.<\/p>\n
The approval, which was issued by Minister of Mines and Energy
\nI.B. Sudjana on Feb. 17, was based on a recommendation of the
\nministry's commission for environment impact analysis after
\nhaving conducted on-the-spot checking on the environment in its
\nmining area, field trips to the job site and villagers in Irian
\nJaya, as well as examinations of its documents, the company said.<\/p>\n
In a statement made available yesterday the company said that
\nthe plans outline long-term tailing management and monitoring
\nactivities based on input from many government agencies including
\nthe ministries of forestry, mines and energy, and public works,
\nas well as the local administration.<\/p>\n
The U.S.-Indonesian joint venture now holds a mining
\nconcession, called Block A, at a 10,000 hectare area and Block B,
\nat 2.6 million hectares in size, located in Irian Jaya. (fhp)<\/p>",
