Farhan offers development of Jelekong landfill in Bandung to investors
Bandung – Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan has opened the option of offering the development of the Jelekong Final Waste Disposal Site (TPA) in Bandung Regency to investors to accelerate infrastructure development and integrated waste management across the Greater Bandung region.
Farhan stated that the land at the former Jelekong TPA is available, but road access to the location still needs to be developed to ensure the project can run optimally.
“The land is there, it’s just the access that needs to be pursued. It must be pursued. If permitted, I will gather a few colleagues for discussion to find business actors who can help us invest here,” said Farhan in Bandung on Saturday.
According to him, the financing scheme for developing the TPA is actually already available through certain funding concepts. However, realisation must be accompanied by basic infrastructure development in parallel, particularly road access to the area.
“If we jointly build road access into here, Bandung City and Bandung Regency will definitely both benefit. The benefits are clearly there,” he said.
Farhan revealed that Bandung City produces approximately 1,500 tonnes of waste per day, whilst Bandung Regency produces around 1,800 tonnes per day.
“This means that these two regions alone are already producing nearly 3,300 tonnes of waste every day, with approximately 80 per cent still being managed using open dumping systems,” he said.
Meanwhile, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that developing road access falls under the authority of the Public Works Ministry according to applicable mechanisms.
He added that local governments need to prepare technical designs and land acquisition, whilst the physical construction of the road can be realised after administrative procedures are completed.
“If road access is assigned to the Public Works Minister to encourage its development, what is needed is the design and land acquisition. As for the physical construction, I believe there is no problem,” said Hanif.
