A video circulating widely on social media platforms shows a corruption convict from Kendari Detention Centre in Southeast Sulawesi allegedly stopping by a restaurant for a meal after attending a judicial review (PK) hearing. The footage has ignited public fury, as it is perceived to reflect unequal treatment compared to other corruption inmates. In response, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) has stated that it is conducting an immediate internal examination by relevant authorities. Kasubdit Kerjasama Ditjen Pemasyarakatan Kemenkumham RI, Rika Aprianti, confirmed that a joint team is thoroughly investigating the incident. “Regarding the information circulating about an inmate from Kendari Detention Centre who stopped by a restaurant after the judicial review (PK) hearing, we can state the following: the incident is being examined by a joint team from the Internal Compliance Operational Unit (Sat Ops Patnal) of the Directorate General of Corrections and the Southeast Sulawesi Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, involving all relevant parties including the inmate and the officers,” Rika emphasised when contacted on Thursday, 16 April 2026. Not only the inmate but also the escorting officers are under scrutiny. Rika stressed that firm sanctions await if violations are confirmed, applicable to both the inmate and the personnel involved. “If violations are proven, or the extent of the breach is determined—whether by the inmate in question or the officers—sanctions and punishments will be imposed in accordance with applicable regulations,” she said. Furthermore, Rika noted that the Minister’s instructions are clear: there is no tolerance for disciplinary violations, extending even to leadership levels. “In line with the Minister’s directives, the examination will cover from the Head of the Detention Centre, the Head of Security, to the escorting officers involved in the incident. If violations are proven, actions will be taken according to regulations, up to dismissal from position,” she added. Finally, Rika appreciated the public’s role in exposing the case and sought ongoing support to enhance the correctional system effectively. “Thank you to the public for assisting with social oversight; we request your continued support in our efforts to provide guidance and enforce rules, as an essential part of inmate rehabilitation,” she concluded.
