JAKARTA, KOMPAS — Chinese Premier Li Qiang began his state visit to Indonesia by meeting business figures in Jakarta on Saturday evening (24/5/2025). During his three-day official visit, Li Qiang will also meet President Prabowo Subianto and House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani.

Premier Li Qiang arrived at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta at 15.21 local time on Saturday. He was greeted by an honour guard lined up at the foot of the aircraft stairs to provide an official welcome. Among those present to receive him were Investment and Downstream Industries Minister/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board Rosan P Roeslani, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong, and Indonesian Ambassador to China Jauhari Oratmangun.

Deputy for Protocol, Press and Media at the Presidential Secretariat Yusuf Permana said that upon arriving in Indonesia, Li Qiang immediately commenced a series of official engagements with various parties. He attended a meeting with Indonesian business people and entrepreneurs on Saturday evening.

The following day, on Sunday, Li Qiang was scheduled to meet President Prabowo Subianto at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. President Prabowo and Premier Li Qiang were to hold a one-on-one meeting followed by bilateral talks with their respective national delegations.

"After the meeting, the two leaders are planned to witness the signing of memoranda of understanding between the two countries, followed by a joint press statement regarding a number of discussion points addressed during the meeting," said Yusuf.

In addition to meeting President Prabowo, Li Qiang was also scheduled to hold several internal meetings whilst in Jakarta. The Chinese Premier was set to meet House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani at the DPR building in Jakarta.

Yusuf stated that Li Qiang's visit would strengthen diplomatic relations between the two countries. Indonesia and China have maintained diplomatic ties for more than seven decades and have established cooperation across various sectors. "This visit is expected to further strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations," said Yusuf.

Rosan said Li Qiang's visit carried enormous potential for strengthening economic cooperation, particularly through the expansion of Chinese investment. The focus of this visit was to open opportunities for new cross-sector projects.

Li Qiang's arrival brought approximately 60 major business leaders from China. At the business meeting organised by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), around 100 Chinese entrepreneurs were to meet with 100 Indonesian entrepreneurs. The forum was considered highly strategic for driving the formation of concrete new agreements.

Rosan added that several new project agreements between Indonesia and China were expected. The projects would involve the business community across various sectors, including state-owned enterprises (BUMN). Areas of cooperation to be explored included transport, industrial cluster development, mineral downstream processing, and chemicals. The cooperation would also involve synergies between private companies and SOEs. Among the projects were railway carriages and electric vehicle batteries.

"These are new projects, and of course we at the Ministry of Investment will oversee them to ensure they proceed well and in line with expectations," he said.

Regarding foreign policy issues such as trade relations with the United States, Rosan affirmed that the primary focus was on deepening mutually beneficial bilateral partnerships. "We will focus more on discussing the strengthening of collaboration between the two countries," he said.
