A viral social media video last week showed a husband and wife couple, poultry traders, protesting at the Rantauprapat Tax Service Office (KPP Pratama) in North Sumatra after discovering their bank account had been frozen by tax authorities. The incident occurred after they received a tax bill of 768 million rupiah.

The Directorate General of Taxes (DJP) North Sumatra II Regional Office (Kanwil) issued a statement regarding the matter. The office acknowledged the video and media coverage concerning a taxpayer requesting that the account freeze be lifted.

“The incident did occur, and we must clarify that the taxpayer in question visited KPP Pratama Rantau Prapat to request an explanation regarding the account freezing carried out as part of debt collection for outstanding tax obligations,” said Kanwil DJP North Sumatra II Head Lucas Hendrawan in an official statement on Monday, 16 March 2026.

According to Hendrawan, DJP staff at KPP Pratama Rantau Prapat received the taxpayer and provided explanations regarding the calculation basis of tax obligations, including the inspection process and collection procedures carried out in accordance with applicable regulations.

Hendrawan explained that under tax provisions, account freezing is an active collection measure that may be implemented if an assessed tax debt remains unpaid by the taxpayer.

“Before reaching this stage, a series of collection procedures have been executed in accordance with regulations, beginning with warning notices, the issuance of enforcement notices, and further collection actions as regulated under the Ministry of Finance Regulation Number 61 of 2023 concerning Procedures for Tax Collection Implementation,” he stated.

He noted that KPP Pratama Rantau Prapat staff had communicated that the account freeze can only be lifted if the conditions specified in the regulations are satisfied. Additionally, the taxpayer retains the right to pursue administrative remedies in accordance with applicable tax provisions.

“The DJP remains committed to executing its duties professionally, transparently, and in accordance with legal provisions, and will continue to maintain open communication channels with taxpayers in resolving their tax obligations,” Hendrawan affirmed.
