BMKG (Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika) issued an early warning for Central Java today, 20 May 2026. Residents are urged to remain vigilant for extreme weather in nine districts of Central Java on this Wednesday (20 May). In addition to heavy rains in mountainous areas, a threat of tidal flooding (banjir rob) along the northern coast and high waves in southern waters are serious concerns.

Forecaster Risca Maulida of the Ahmad Yani Semarang Meteorological Station explained that although the region has entered the dry season, weather anomalies are still triggering showers of varying intensity. ‘Extreme weather in the form of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and lightning could occur in mountainous and highland areas from the afternoon to early evening,’ she said.

Coastal conditions on Central Java’s northern coast are also on alert. Tidal elevations of up to 1 metre are predicted between 10:00 and 15:00 WIB. This could cause tidal flooding at several points; forecaster Sediyanto of the Maritime Station Tanjung Emas Semarang warned that such tides may disrupt essential activities. ‘Be vigilant for disruptions to transportation, loading and unloading at ports, and salt-farming activities in affected areas,’ he emphasised.

Meanwhile, southern waters of Central Java face a risk of high waves, ranging from 1.25 to 2.5 metres. BMKG has urged operators of fishing vessels, tugs and passenger transport to exercise caution, particularly when wind speeds exceed 15 knots.

Visitors to beaches along the southern coast are advised not to swim or to stay away from the shore to avoid marine accidents caused by high waves.

In general, daytime temperatures in Central Java today are expected to range from 18 to 34 degrees Celsius, with humidity between 50 and 95 per cent. Winds will blow from the east to the south at 3 to 27 kilometres per hour. The public is urged to remain alert to hydrometeorological hazards such as landslides and whirlwinds.
