Behind the Andrie Yunus Case, Terror Looms Over the Legal Aid Team
In the midst of the ongoing legal process for the case of Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of KontraS, other shadows have emerged. It is not only about revealing the perpetrators but also about the safety of those handling the case. Terror, intimidation, and threats now accompany the handling of the case surrounding Andrie Yunus. The legal aid team advocating for this case admits to receiving pressure on social media. The pressure does not only occur in the digital space. Activist networks in the regions are experiencing similar issues, even targeting families. “For example, threats where families are followed, terrorised, and so on,” said Jane. Members of the Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD) have also received threats via social media to personal numbers. This situation has prompted the activists to take protective measures. They have submitted requests to the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) and the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK). She assesses that protection for human rights defenders is still very minimal. “Today, the condition of protection for human rights defenders is very minimal because there is no specific regulation governing the protection of human rights defenders,” she explained. TAUD member, Afif Abdul Qoyim, confirmed the existence of these threats. One of them occurred when the team was guarding at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), where Andrie is being treated.
