Former Religion Minister (Menag) Yaqut Cholil Qoumas (YCQ) was formally detained by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) after being designated as a suspect in a hajj quota corruption case. Following Yaqut’s detention, Banser supporters who had gathered in front of the KPK chanted that the KPK was tyrannical and burned shirts bearing the KPK logo.

Monitoring on site by detikcom on Thursday, 12 March 2026, showed that Banser supporters began shouting “KPK is tyrannical” as Yaqut was escorted to the detention vehicle whilst wearing an orange jumpsuit. The Banser supporters also moved closer to the KPK fence to observe Yaqut’s condition directly.

After Yaqut entered the detention vehicle, Banser supporters continued shouting and proceeded to burn a shirt bearing the KPK logo. The Banser supporters also shook and rattled the KPK fence in an attempt to breach the perimeter. However, the Banser supporters who were reacting were eventually calmed by other Banser supporters. Police officers also helped to maintain order and control the crowd.

It is known that the KPK ultimately detained former Religion Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas (YCQ) in connection with the hajj quota corruption case. Yaqut was detained following his designation as a suspect in January 2026.

Yaqut descended from the second floor of the examination room at 18:45 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) on Thursday, 12 March 2026. Yaqut was already wearing an orange jumpsuit with both hands shackled.

Yaqut appeared today to respond to the KPK’s examination summons. Yaqut arrived at 13:05 WIB accompanied by his legal advisory team.

In this case, Yaqut previously challenged the KPK’s suspect designation through a pre-trial motion to the court. However, Yaqut’s pre-trial motion was rejected by the judge.

The judge stated that the KPK’s designation of Yaqut as a suspect already complied with proper procedure and applicable regulations. The judge stated that the scope of pre-trial review only concerns procedural aspects.

“The court hereby rejects the plaintiff’s pre-trial motion in its entirety,” said sole judge Sulistyo Muhamad Dwi Putro when delivering the verdict in pre-trial case number 19/Pid.Pra/2026/PN JKT.SEL at South Jakarta District Court on Wednesday, 11 March.
