Bali bombers to seek case review
Bali bombers to seek case review
JAKARTA: The executions of Amrozi, Imam Samudra and Mukhlas --
all sentenced to death for their roles in the 2002 Bali bombings
-- will likely be delayed further as their lawyers said on
Thursday that they would seek a case review on their behalf.
"By early December, we will petition the Supreme Court to
review the convictions of our three clients," lawyer Achmad
Michdan said in Jakarta.
He said the such action was the last legal recourse open to
Amrozi, Imam Samudra and Mukhlas.
From the beginning the defense had objected to their clients
being tried in Denpasar, which Michdan said was "not neutral".
The lawyers also opposed the charging of the three under the
antiterror regulation in lieu.
"The Bali bombings took place on Oct. 12, 2002, while the
regulation was enacted on Oct. 18, 2002. It should not have been
applied retroactively," Michdan argued.
He said the lawyers had been given letters of appointment from
Amrozi, Imam and Mukhlas to seek reviews of their cases, and also
had the necessary new evidence for seeking such reviews. The
three bombers had earlier refused to seek presidential pardons.
Angry Balinese staged a series of protests in the wake of the
latest Bali bombings to demand that the three be executed.
