MELBOURNE (AP): Australia's industry and union leaders said Thursday the country's paper industry is at risk of being swamped by an Indonesian manufacturer with huge stockpiles and a reputation for dumping on overseas markets.
Industry leader Amcor, unions and lobby groups have united in an appeal that Customs Minister Amanda Vanstone retain dumping penalties against Tjiwi Kimia, part of the Asia Pulp & Paper (PAP) conglomerate.
Tjiwi Kimia has applied to have penalties imposed after it dumped four years ago removed.
"This is a company that has a propensity to dump, has dumped in the past and would no doubt do so again," said Arthur Williamson, marketing managing director of Amcor's Australian Paper.
"The domestic market could not compete with dumped goods... we are concerned for the Australian market and (therefore) the employment situation," he said.
