Abilio reelected E. Timor governor
DILI, East Timor (JP): Abilio Jose Osorio Soares was reelected yesterday as governor of East Timor for the 1997/2002 period in a landslide victory over two other candidates.
All 45 council members cast their votes in a special plenary meeting of the provincial legislative council.
Abilio captured 40 votes while Nazario Jose Tilman de Andrade and Virgilio Maria Dias Marcel only obtained three and two votes respectively.
Also witnessing the election were director general for general administration and regional autonomy at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Oman Syahroni, and chief of Udayana Regional Military Command, Maj. Gen. Syahrir.
Syahroni said the election proceeded as usual and took into account the aspirations of local people.
Syahrir expressed gratitude for the East Timorese participation in ensuring the success of the gubernatorial election.
Days before the election tensions were high among locals following rumors that a massive demonstration would take place if Abilio was reelected.
Some traders decided not to open their businesses yesterday in anticipation of the demonstration, which did not take place. Troops were seen posted at various strategic locations.
Andrade, who is regent of Manufahi, said he was not disappointed by his defeat.
"I will continue to support the programs of the governor- elect," he said. "On behalf of the residents of Manufahi, I congratulate (Abilio)."
Presided over by Council Speaker Armindo Soares Mariano, the balloting proceeded smoothly with councilor Natercia Osorio Soares, who is Abilio's younger sister, casting the first vote. (23/10)
