Abilio reelected E. Timor governor<\/p>\n
DILI, East Timor (JP): Abilio Jose Osorio Soares was reelected
\nyesterday as governor of East Timor for the 1997\/2002 period in a
\nlandslide victory over two other candidates.<\/p>\n
All 45 council members cast their votes in a special plenary
\nmeeting of the provincial legislative council.<\/p>\n
Abilio captured 40 votes while Nazario Jose Tilman de Andrade
\nand Virgilio Maria Dias Marcel only obtained three and two votes
\nrespectively.<\/p>\n
Also witnessing the election were director general for general
\nadministration and regional autonomy at the Ministry of Home
\nAffairs, Oman Syahroni, and chief of Udayana Regional Military
\nCommand, Maj. Gen. Syahrir.<\/p>\n
Syahroni said the election proceeded as usual and took into
\naccount the aspirations of local people.<\/p>\n
Syahrir expressed gratitude for the East Timorese
\nparticipation in ensuring the success of the gubernatorial
\nelection.<\/p>\n
Days before the election tensions were high among locals
\nfollowing rumors that a massive demonstration would take place if
\nAbilio was reelected.<\/p>\n
Some traders decided not to open their businesses yesterday in
\nanticipation of the demonstration, which did not take place.
\nTroops were seen posted at various strategic locations.<\/p>\n
Andrade, who is regent of Manufahi, said he was not
\ndisappointed by his defeat.<\/p>\n
\"I will continue to support the programs of the governor-
\nelect,\" he said. \"On behalf of the residents of Manufahi, I
\ncongratulate (Abilio).\"<\/p>\n
Presided over by Council Speaker Armindo Soares Mariano, the
\nballoting proceeded smoothly with councilor Natercia Osorio
\nSoares, who is Abilio's younger sister, casting the first vote.
