'A BETTER FOUNDATION FOR A BETTER FUTURE'

Increasing competition resulting from economic globalization has undoubtedly brought formidable challenges to young people these days. Obtaining a broad-based and internationally-oriented education has become a necessity in the face of such a challenging future.

BiNus School provides a multicultural environment that provides opportunities for students aged 3 to 18 to receive internationally recognized education through its academic, extracurricular and religious programs. Adopting the Western Australian Senior Curriculum and the Indonesian Curriculum in the High and Middle schools, and offering the International Baccalaureate in the Pre- and Elementary Schools, the School focuses on the development of each child's intellectual, physical, emotional, social and spiritual dimensions.

"Educational research and especially Gardner's `Multiple Intelligences' theory has shown conclusively that there are vast differences in the learning style of children. Every student is a unique individual because they have different ways in which they see the world as well as preferences in learning styles. A teacher can stand in front of the classroom, read from a textbook or show numbers on the board in Mathematics and probably reach only a very small portion of the class. That's why we always encourage our teachers to vary their teaching styles in a bid to cater for the varied intelligences and learning styles of students," said Principal of BiNus School, Gregory C. Mowday.

Students who have completed their secondary education at BiNus School will receive dual secondary education graduation. Besides receiving the Indonesian National Certificate, they will also obtain the Western Australian Certificate of Education, which can be used to access higher education institutions overseas.

"Up to 80 percent of our graduates pursue international higher education in Australia, the US, Canada, Europe and Southeast Asia. Internationally accredited and recognized certification provides them with the opportunity to meet the entrance standards of universities worldwide. This provides our graduates with direct entry to mainstream under-graduate courses abroad, on condition they meet the standards, without the need to complete a bridging course," said Mr. Mowday.

Growing demand in the market for international-standard education has encouraged BiNus School, which was established in 1998 as a National-Plus Senior High School, to open to receive students for Pre-school, Elementary and Middle School levels in July of this year. The International Baccalaureate (IB) "Primary Years Program" will be the curriculum for the Pre-school and Elementary School, and the Middle School will be offered the "Middle Years Program" next year, followed by the Diploma Program in the very near future. The IB has international recognition as a high-quality educational program.

The newly developed campus in Simprug, South Jakarta, is a purpose-built education facility that consists of three towers serving pre-primary, primary and secondary education. Each classroom is fully air-conditioned and is equipped to international standards. The School offers teaching, learning, cultural and sporting facilities, including discipline-specific science laboratories, computer laboratories, a fully resourced library, indoor basketball and badminton centers, a music instruction facility and a visual and performing arts center.

The School also provides support services for students such as counseling and guidance, a health clinic and access to Internet and the audio-visual network from all areas in the buildings.

In addition, BiNus School provides diverse extra-curricula activities that encourage students to participate and to explore their potential and preferences. The activities range from art, film production, photography, handicrafts, newsletter publishing, modern dance, Mandarin, music, electronics, web design, introduction to business, badminton, basketball, volleyball and table tennis, to outdoor education. The students can also enter interschool and inter-regional competitions, including those for the Sciences and Mathematics, Information Technology and debating.

To build a close partnership with the parents, the School has established a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). Through the PTA, the parents are directly involved in their child's educational program and development.

"The involvement of Parents is essential to our School. A strong partnership and good communication between school and home provides the opportunity for all stakeholders to contribute in achieving high quality education. The PTA acts as our advisory group on all aspects of the School from educational methods to issues that concern them, and with their inputs, we are more able to positively respond to them", Mr. Mowday said.
