JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Deputy Chairman of DPR Commission X, Lalu Hadrian Irfani, has called on the government to immediately conduct a thorough evaluation of the implementation of science learning practices in schools, following the incident involving an explosion of a homemade 3D-based rifle that killed a student in Siak Regency, Riau.

“This incident serves as a serious reminder that learning activities, particularly those involving experiments or engineering projects, must prioritise safety as the utmost concern,” Lalu Hadrian stated when contacted on Thursday (9/4/2026).

“I urge the Ministry of Education to promptly carry out a comprehensive evaluation of project-based learning practices in schools, including the formulation of national guidelines on student experiment safety,” he added.

According to him, the incident reveals gaps in supervision, risk assessment, and safety procedures within educational units.

“Potentially hazardous practical activities should undergo a curation process, teacher supervision, and rigorous feasibility testing before being demonstrated by students,” Lalu Hadrian said.

“Additionally, it is important to enhance teachers’ capacity in risk management and ensure adequate supervision in every practical activity,” he concluded.

Previously reported, the fatal incident occurred at the Islamic Center Junior High School (SMP) in Siak Regency, Riau, on Wednesday (8/4/2026), around 10:30 WIB.

A ninth-grade student with initials MA (15) died due to the explosion of a 3D-printed rifle he brought to the practical. The Head of Criminal Investigation Unit (Kasatreskrim) of Siak Police, AKP Raja Kosmos Parmulais, confirmed the incident when contacted.

“The incident happened during a science practical exam on the school field,” Kosmos told Kompas.com via WhatsApp message on Wednesday evening.

Kosmos explained that the victim, along with other students, was conducting a science practical exam.

The students were divided into five groups, each consisting of nine people. Each group demonstrated their science project outcomes.

The victim’s group was demonstrating a homemade 3D-printed rifle. When it was the victim’s group’s turn to test the project, the other groups were instructed to move away.

The victim then began testing the homemade 3D-printed rifle.
