Timah sets aside Rp 2t for expansion in coal

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta PT Timah, the world's second largest tin producer, has allocated up to Rp 2 trillion (US$216 billion) to acquire several mining companies, an official said Monday. President director Wachid Usman told reporters Monday the company was in talks to buy mining companies in East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan and South Sulawesi to increase its coal reserves to 50 million tons this year.

The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) urged the government Monday to give exact figures for the upcoming fuel price increases to avoid further damaging local industries. Kadin Chairman Mohammad Hidayat said the delay was fostering market speculations, leading to price rises in other commodities.

Govt urged to address casino issue in Bintan

The Bintan regency administration has asked the government for an immediate ruling on legalizing gambling in the Bintan Exclusive Tourism Resort (KWTE). The local administration and legislature said current law made legalized gambling a real possibility. Djoko Zakaria, head of the KWTE ordinance special committee, told The Jakarta Post on Sunday gambling in public was forbidden under the Criminal Code, unless a permit had been issued by the relevant authorities.

Leighton wins coal contract at Samboja

Australia's leading construction and contract mining group Leighton Holdings Ltd said on Monday its Thiess unit has been awarded a $250 million five-year coal mining contract in Indonesia, Thomson Financial reported. The contract with PT Inkor Prima Coal includes overburden removal and mine support services at its Samboja coal mine in East Kalimantan, and is due to commence in June, the company said.

India’s Monnet Global, the overseas subsidiary of steel maker Monnet Ispat & Energy Ltd (MIEL), is set to acquire mining rights for a 250-million ton coal reserve from PT Anzawara, India's The Economic Times reported Tuesday. The deal would enable the company to start coal trading and look for lucrative markets in China, Southeast Asia and India. Monnet has interests in steel and power sectors.

Govt. to start verifying all mining products

Exporters of all mining products will have to undergo a new verification process by government-appointed surveyors effective July 5, an official said Tuesday, The Jakarta Post reported. Diah Maulida, the Trade Ministry's Director General for International Trade, said the process was part of a regulation put in place by the ministry to avoid the illegal export of mining commodities.

Batam (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has established the Free Trade Zones Council for Batam, Bintan and Karimun of Riau Islands province here on Monday (May 12), a governor said. "According to Minister/State Secretary, that is true, but I haven`t yet read the contents," Ismeth Abdullah, Riau Islands governor told Antara through SMS (mobile phone short messages) Monday night regarding the note on the setting up of the council.

Bogor, West Java (ANTARA News) - Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said the current surge in the prices of basic necessaries was not caused by stock scarcities or distribution network problems. "The government is studying the possibility that anticipatory steps taken by traders in the runup to the fuel oil price hikes have caused the commodity price hikes," the minister said here on Monday.

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Publicly-listed tapioca producer PT Budi Acid Jaya Tbk plans to build a bioethanol plant with a production capacity of 75,000 kiloliters in Lampung province at a cost of US$43 million. "Work on the construction of the plant will begin this year and the plant is projected to start commercial production in 2010," Budi Acid Deputy President Director Sudarmo Tasmin said on Monday.

President asks the people to support Suramadu bridge construction

Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA News )- President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked the people to support the constructiion of the 5,4- kilometer Surabaya-Madura (Sutramadu) bridge in East Java as it is currently facing land clearance problems. "Let us work together in building the bridge for completion as scheduled," the president said on the Indonesian warship, KRI Soeharso, during an inspection of the construction work of the Suramadu bridge on the Madura Strait on Monday.
