some real oddities in this story.  Quote: Ibrahim said the three had been arrested last Friday when they were about to extend their temporary visa. excuse me, but if they had tourist visas, then (legal) extension is impossible! so what was it; a tourist visa (VoA), or perhaps an extendable business or social visa? why is the head of Bogor immigration office clearly lying about this? maybe he was misquoted ...

BOGOR, West Java (Antara): The Bogor Immigration Office has arrested three Malaysians, identified as The Choong Eng (53), Yap Yuen Loy (43), and Tee Kok Khing (31), for violating immigration permits and other papers, an official said. "The three Malaysians used their tourist visas for employment in a company in Bogor. They worked at the quality control division of PT Mastrotto Indonesia in Sentul, Bogor," said head of the Bogor Immigration Office Ibrahim Saleh on Monday.

Morgan Stanley Prepares Billion Dollar Fund

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Morgan Stanley is preparing US$1.5 billion fund (around Rp10 trillion) for investment in several Asian countries, including Indonesia. According to Morgan Stanley’s Private Equity Managing Director, H. Chin Chou, the fund will be invested in the large-scaled sector, such as mining and financial services. “Infrastructure is also one sector that is being considered,” he told reporters in Jakarta last week.

RI enjoys $3.55 B surplus in foreign trade

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia saw a surplus of US$3.55 billion in its foreign trade in August with exports rising to US$9.81 billion and imports standing at US$6.26 billion. Cumulatively, the country`s trade surplus in the first seven months of 2007 reached US$23.64 billion, Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Chief Rusman Heriawan said on Monday. In the January-July 2007 period, Indonesia`s exports reached US$63.53 billion and its imports stood at US$39.89 billion, he said.

European tourist arrivals in Indonesia unaffected by flight ban

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The ban by the European Aviation Authority for the Indonesian airlines to fly over its airspace does not affect the flow of European tourists arriving in Indonesia, a spokesman said. "We do not see any impact of the ban on the flow of European tourists into Indonesia because in reality we have no airlines flying the European space," Central Board of Statistics (BPS) head Rusman Heriawan said on Monday.

Govt to earmark 30 million ha of land for permanent farming

Surabaya (ANTARA News) - The government has set itself the target of earmarking a total of 30 million hectares of land in the country as permanent farmland which cannot be turned into land for other purposes, Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono said. "To date, Indonesia only has about 7.4 million hectares of farmland. We hope we can have a total of 30 million hectares of permanent farmland in the future," he said after delivering a speech at a meeting here Monday.

Adidas Workers Cannot Seize Company’s Assets

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Manpower and Transmigration Minister Erman Soeparno stated that the workers of PT Tong Yang Indonesia (TYI) Group, which produces Adidas and Reebok shoes, cannot seize the company’s assets for their severance pay. This is because the main function of the company’s assets is for repaying debts to creditors, such as Bank Mandiri. “The remaining assets will then be distributed to employees,” he told Tempo yesterday (2/8).

Indonesia Not Main Market for Cheap Laptop

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Indonesia is not the main market for the cheap laptop produced by Asustek Computer, Taiwan. Asus Indonesia’s spokesperson, Titi Kristiani, said that so far her she has not yet received any information from Taiwan regarding the arrival of the cheap laptop. “Therefore, Indonesians must be patient,” said Titi in Jakarta last week. Asus Indonesia also still needs time to prepare the laptop marketing strategy.
