New consumer protection law I refer to the article in The Jakarta Post on April 16, 2000, titled New law boosts consumer's position. Everyone will agree that consumers in Indonesia need to be (better) protected. Is the new law going to help? I don't think so. Indonesia is not very good at implementation. Several excellent laws covering other areas of society are in place already, but they fail to have any effect in practice. Consumer protection is part of the larger concept of abuse.

Seven Thai fishermen jailed SURABAYA: Surabaya district court sentenced seven Thai fishermen on Thursday to four months in jail for illegally fishing in the Java Sea. The fishermen, identified as Wan Chai, Chieng Aphan, Sombat Tit Chom, Somsak Compo, Narung Panpet, Prayun Pra Pwat and Peechar Sion, were arrested in March near the Masalembo islands. According to prosecutor M. Akbar Armansyah, the fishermen hoisted Indonesian flags on their boats in an attempt to deceive patroling naval ships.

Indocement books profit JAKARTA (JP): Publicly listed cementmaker PT Indocement Tunggal Perkasa announced on Friday a net consolidated income of Rp 523.4 billion (US$67 million) for 1999, a reversal from a net loss of Rp 634.1 billion the previous year. In a statement, the company ascribed the 1999 profit to a foreign exchange gain of Rp 527 billion due to the strengthening rupiah. The company had a foreign exchange loss of Rp 1.08 trillion in 1998.
