Communications standards and more modem madness By James O. Scharf [10pt ML] JAKARTA (JP): Last week, we looked at communications "standards" and I gave you a list of some of them. By no means was the list complete. Many other standards are in use and it seems that, at the drop of a hat, another "standard" will pop up to confuse us even more. If you counted, there were 22 standards, encompassing 42 different speeds and modulation techniques.

JAKARTA (JP): Police are investigating a car collision which ended in the theft of an expensive watch, Rp 800,000 in cash and other valuables late last week. City Police Spokesman Lt. Col. A. Latief Rabar said on Saturday that five unidentified men in a Kijang van rammed a sedan, driven by Hartono Gunawan in Cipanas, West Java, on Friday. After the accident, the men offered to repair Hartono's car rather than calling the police to handle the accident.

Medan still tense following bloody worker riots MEDAN (JP): The situation in the capital city of North Sumatra remained tense yesterday as the streets remained quiet as many businesses and shops kept their doors shut. Although the local security agency announced that the situation was already under control, about 80 large factories located along the road connecting the city and Belawan seaport were silent. The 26-kilometer road, notorious for its traffic jams, was deserted yesterday.

Painting stolen
Painting stolen from exhibition A painting has been stolen from an exhibit at the Stage restaurant at the Ratu Plaza shopping center in South Jakarta. Michael, the manager of the Stage, told YThe Jakarta Post late last week that the stolen painting, entitled Grandma Moses Goes to the Tambora, was one of many works by an American artist nicknamed Tompel on display at the restaurant. The exhibit continues through April 20.

Humpuss grows into giant holding company JAKARTA (JP):The Humpuss Group, which started business 10 years ago, has grown into a giant holding company of widely- diversified businesses with total assets of more than Rp 1.05 trillion (US$491.11 billion). Edwin Hudioro, the group's finance director, said here over the weekend that the group's total sales reached almost Rp 1 trillion in 1992, giving it a before-tax profit of Rp 600 billion.

Bambang Sumarno in August last year.
