Award planned for brave Metromini driver

JAKARTA (JP): City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Mochammad Hindarto will present an award today to the driver of a Metro Mini minibus who foiled a robbery on the bus by swerving into the compound of a police station late last week.

"We do appreciate what he did to save his passengers from losses," Maj. Gen. Hindarto said here on Saturday.

Suranto, 30, was driving his T-44 minibus plying the Pulo Gadung-Pulau Gebang route at 11:30 a.m. Friday when the five armed criminals, sitting among the 25 passengers, stood up, took over the bus and started to steal the passengers's belongings.

After driving a bit further, Suranto quickly swerved the bus into the Cakung police station and jumped out, shouting for help.

The criminals tried to run away. Police managed to capture one of them, while the four others escaped arrest.

"Suranto's bravery is just one form of public cooperation with the police in combating crimes in the city," Hindarto said. (bsr)
