Zulhas: Waste-to-Energy Project Commences in June, Government Pursues Urban Waste Solution
JAKARTA – The government is targeting the commencement of construction on its Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) project, with the foundation stone laying scheduled for no later than June 2026. This milestone will mark the beginning of waste processing facility development across several major cities.
Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan stated that the project will commence in four cities during the initial phase of PSEL development.
“By the end of June, God willing, we will hold the groundbreaking ceremony for physical construction work. That is phase one,” Zulkifli Hasan said at his office in Jakarta on Thursday, 12 March 2026.
The first phase of the PSEL project will be undertaken in Denpasar Raya, Bekasi City, Bogor Raya, and Yogyakarta.
“Contracts are already in place for four sites,” stated Zulkifli Hasan.
Beyond the initial phase, the government is also planning phase two PSEL development across 14 regions. However, only 10 regions have been confirmed as part of this plan to date.
Several designated regions include Lampung, Semarang, Medan, Surabaya, Tangerang, Tangerang City, Serang, and three locations in Jakarta.
He revealed that waste volumes originating from Jakarta reach approximately 8,000 tonnes per day.
To address this challenge, the government is planning PSEL facility construction at several Jakarta locations.
A facility with a capacity of 3,000 tonnes of waste per day will be constructed at Bantar Gebang. Additionally, PSEL facilities will be built at the Tanjung waste processing site with a capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day, and at Sunter in North Jakarta with a capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day.
“Hopefully the incident that occurred previously will not happen again, which demonstrates that we genuinely need to accelerate this effort,” said Zulkifli Hasan.
“We do not want any further problems,” he added.
