Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has acknowledged that the waste pile landslide incident at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Facility (TPST) has had a significant impact on Jakarta’s waste management system. The temporary closure of Zone 4A operations has forced the provincial government to urgently restructure the pattern of waste distribution from Jakarta.

Pramono revealed that Jakarta currently generates a very large daily waste volume of between 7,400 and 8,000 tonnes, with the highest figures typically recorded at weekends. “Currently, Jakarta’s daily waste is between 7,400 and 8,000 tonnes. The 8,000-tonne figure usually occurs at weekends,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (9 March).

The PDIP politician emphasised that the operational halt at Zone 4A could not be avoided in order to ensure safety. As a mitigation measure, the Jakarta provincial government will tighten waste sorting processes from their source to reduce the burden on Bantargebang. “There will certainly be an impact. For this reason, we will carry out the waste sorting process at the source and also arrange for it not all to be sent to Bantargebang,” he explained.

According to Pramono, the capacity of TPST Bantargebang is currently at a critical point. Therefore, restricting waste deliveries has become a crucial step to prevent more severe damage in other areas. As a short-term solution, the local government is preparing to divert waste disposal to other zones that still have remaining capacity. Pramono mentioned that Zone 3 and two new zones will be temporarily optimised.

“For the time being, whilst Zone 4A is being restored, Zone 3 and two new zones are being prepared. This is temporary in nature, not permanent,” Pramono added. He hopes that the recovery and reinforcement of the structure at Zone 4A can be completed promptly so that waste distribution in Jakarta returns to normal and does not trigger accumulation at temporary collection points (TPS) at the subdistrict level. “Our hope is that Zone 4A can be restored quickly,” he concluded.
