YouTube Complies with Kemkomdigi Directive, Restricts Users Under 16
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid officially announced that the digital platform YouTube, under the umbrella of technology giant Google, has finally complied with Kemkomdigi’s directive to restrict child users under 16 years old on its platform. This step aligns with the spirit of Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on Child Protection Governance in the Management of Electronic Systems (PP Tunas). “We wish to convey that today the Government appreciates that YouTube, under Google, has submitted a letter of compliance. The compliance letter was directly handed over to the Director General of Digital Space Supervision (Dirjen Wasdig),” said Meutya during a press conference at the Ministry of Komdigi office in Jakarta on Wednesday. Meutya stated that YouTube’s commitment to complying with PP Tunas has been implemented by amending its community guidelines to affirm that the digital platform will eliminate accounts for users under 16 years old. To the Government, YouTube has also committed to gradually deactivating accounts owned by users 16 years old and below in the future. Additionally, they will eliminate advertisements targeting children and teenagers. With YouTube’s compliance with PP Tunas announced today, it means there are now seven digital platforms following Indonesia’s steps to safeguard the digital space for children. “The seven platforms in total start from X, Bigo Live, Meta which consists of IG, Facebook, Threads; TikTok, and now YouTube. All of them have given commitments of compliance to work together with the government to protect children in Indonesia in the digital realm,” said Meutya. PP Tunas has been in effect in Indonesia since 28 March 2026. In the initial implementation phase, eight platforms were requested to immediately comply with this regulation, including X, Bigo Live, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and Roblox. The latest data on Wednesday (22/4) shows that seven platforms have fully complied with PP Tunas, namely X, Bigo Live, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, TikTok, and YouTube. This regulation is certainly not limited to just these eight platforms; Kemkomdigi emphasises that other digital platforms should promptly comply with PP Tunas by the deadline of June 2026 to create a safe digital space for Indonesian children.
