Yorris to be tried for gambling: Police

JAKARTA (JP): A Golkar representative in the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Yorris Raweyai, and four other suspected gamblers will soon be taken to court for their alleged involvement in gambling in West Jakarta, police said.

City police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said over the weekend that his office had completed its investigation on the five suspects and had handed the dossiers to the Prosecutor's Office.

"We handed over the dossiers of the five on Tuesday. The trial can be held soon," he said.

He said the five stood charged of violating Article 303 of the Criminal Code on gambling activities.

The article carries a maximum penalty of two years and eight months or a Rp 6,000 fine.

Aritonang said the handing over of the dossiers proved that his office took all crimes seriously and brought all suspects before the court regardless their status or position.

The police have been beset by allegations that the investigation on Yorris would most likely be dropped because of his position as an MPR member.

Yorris and the four unidentified suspects were arrested by the military during a raid on a discotheque on Jl. Hayam Wuruk on Jan. 29. (cst)
