Yogyakarta City Government Visits Azizah, the Kindergarten Child Caring for Her Father, to Assess Aid
The Yogyakarta City Government (Pemkot Jogja) will provide assistance to Azizah Chandrasari (6), a kindergarten child who has been caring for her father, Hermanto (56), who is ill to the point of joining in scavenging. Pemkot Jogja has also conducted an assessment to select suitable assistance.
Head of the Social Affairs, Manpower, and Transmigration Office (Dinsosnakertrans) of Yogyakarta City, Maryustion Tonang, stated that the assessment was carried out by her office today through field checks.
“This morning, the domicile was investigated by TKSK (District Social Welfare Workers),” said Tion, her nickname, when contacted by detikJogja on Saturday (18/4/2026).
Tion mentioned that the assistance that can be given to Azizah’s family is varied, from city government aid to ministerial level. The assessment results will serve as the basis for selecting the assistance.
“Yes (aid provision according to assessment results), if the city ID card is available, it could be entrusted to the Child Care Unit, if the parents are elderly, it could be entrusted to the Abandoned Elderly Unit. We wait for the assessment results,” explained Tion.
“There are many ways (to provide assistance), the assessment results become the foundation in finding solutions. Plans are also to submit for ATENSI assistance for AMPK (children requiring special protection) to the Ministry of Social Affairs,” she added.
It was reported that for the past two weeks or so, Azizah has had to care for her father, Hermanto (56), who is ill, while managing the household. Ironically, Azizah has taken on these tasks while her small body is also unwell.
Hermanto, who works daily as a scavenger, suffers from an illness that he himself admits he does not fully understand the name of. A fairly large lump has appeared on his head, making his body prone to pain if exposed to heat or rain.
“This is the illness. See, if it gets hot, it overheats, right, scavenging every day. If it overheats, it throbs, it shrinks. If it gets cold, it also throbs, shrinks like that,” explained Hermanto when met at his residence on Friday (17/4).
“Yeah, almost two years now. I don’t know, it just appeared like that. (The lump) Initially small. Already (examined), a long time ago, but not as big as this. Not (a tumour),” he continued.
It is this illness that has forced him to rest for the past two weeks. Hermanto has had to rest fully at home without being able to do much. Seeing her father’s condition, Azizah has had no choice but to take over the household work.
“Even though she was sick yesterday. It’s been two weeks, so she washes clothes, just cleans. Washes dishes, massages, often goes to the shop to buy mop like that,” revealed Hermanto.
“That was also when she was sick, already sick, I was sick. She experienced typhoid symptoms, her hair falling out, falling out like that,” he continued.
Hermanto also admitted that he has never received assistance from the government. According to him, assistance has only come from the kindness of good people.
“No (assistance from the Government yet). Yeah, from the government, please help like that. Even a little, as long as there’s assistance like that, my family like that, school yes, her school too, that’s why,” hoped Hermanto.
