Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) in Kulon Progo Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, is now ready to welcome the first batch of Hajj pilgrims this year. Unlike conventional procedures, YIA’s debarkation will serve pilgrims directly at the airport without requiring them to stay at a dormitory, starting Tuesday, 2 June.

All supporting facilities and the Hajj Management Committee (PPIH) have been deployed to ensure the smooth return of the first flight group.

Acting Head of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs for the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Silvia Rosetti, explained that the system adopts a hotel-based embarkation model, marking a new innovation in Indonesia.

“Passengers disembark directly from the plane and enter the airport, where we have prepared a dedicated space for health checks, document verification, and onward travel arrangements,” Silvia said in Kulon Progo on Monday.

After health checks and document verification, pilgrims will be directed to a prayer room before boarding government-provided buses to their hometowns. Silvia stated this streamlined process reduces bureaucracy and lessens fatigue for pilgrims after long flights.

The airport has set up special rooms for temperature checks, immigration procedures (passports and travel documents), and health alert card completion. If pilgrims require urgent medical assistance, the committee has a referral system to nearby facilities such as Temon Community Health Centre or Wates Regional Hospital.

“However, if the airport medical team can adequately address a pilgrim’s health condition, no referral is necessary,” Silvia added.

To maintain comfort, Hajj pilgrims’ movements upon arrival at YIA will be directed via the airport apron, similar to departure routes. This strategy ensures passenger pick-up does not disrupt regular terminal arrivals.

For logistical comfort, PPIH has deployed dedicated staff to assist with baggage handling. “Support staff have been arranged to handle baggage,” Silvia concluded.
