Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - The Regent of Yahukimo, Didimus Yahuli, has urged the public, especially those residing on mountain slopes, to always remain vigilant against the high rainfall intensity, which could lead to natural disasters such as landslides and floods. The Yahukimo Regional Government in Papua Pegunungan Province has already asked residents to be cautious as the current weather is unfavourable due to relatively high rainfall. “Moreover, the homes and gardens of most Yahukimo residents are located on mountain slopes, making them highly vulnerable to natural disasters,” said Regent Didimus when contacted by ANTARA from Jayapura, Papua, on Thursday evening. The regent stated that by staying vigilant against the rain’s impacts, casualties can be avoided, as occurred in Lolat District, where a landslide took place in the area. There were no fatalities in the incident, and 19 households residing on the mountain slopes have been evacuated to safer areas. “I have visited the location and provided aid in the form of food supplies to the residents, and asked them to remain constantly vigilant,” said Regent Didimus. Furthermore, his side continues to monitor the 51 recorded districts and requests ongoing monitoring of conditions in their areas, with immediate reporting. “Hopefully, the rainfall will return to normal, so that the community can go to their gardens for planting to meet their needs,” hoped Yahukimo Regent Didimus Yahuli.
