Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that China will open broader access to United States (US) companies, including in the technology sector, during US President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing. Xi made the statement while meeting a delegation of US company executives accompanying Trump on his trip to China on Thursday (15/5/2026). Several technology company leaders present at the meeting included Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Apple CEO Tim Cook. “China welcomes stronger and mutually beneficial cooperation with the United States, and believes that US companies will have broader prospects in China,” Xi said, quoted by KompasTekno from the Chinese government news agency, Xinhua. Xi also said China’s door to the global business world “will open even wider”, amid US-China relations still coloured by trade and technology tensions. “We have the best businesspeople in the world, and they are here today to show respect to you and to China,” Trump told Xi. In the meeting, Xi also encouraged expanding cooperation between the two countries in fields such as economy, trade, health, agriculture, and technology. According to an Xinhua report, the US company executives also expressed that they still view the Chinese market as a major opportunity and wish to expand their businesses in the country. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the meeting between the two leaders went well. He even described Xi and Trump as “extraordinary” figures. Meanwhile, Elon Musk told reporters that “many good things are happening”, while Tim Cook only gave a peace sign and thumbs up to the media. Xi’s statement comes amid escalating US-China relations due to the trade war, technology access restrictions, and issues over Taiwan and the South China Sea. On the other hand, US technology companies like Nvidia have also been affected by US government restrictions on AI chip exports to China. Nevertheless, analysts assess that this meeting between Xi and the US technology executives serves as a signal that Beijing still wishes to maintain economic relations with major US companies. Xi is also said to want to alleviate global investors’ concerns regarding China’s economic slowdown and new supply chain regulations that previously drew criticism from foreign companies.
