WW II plane wreckage found

SORONG, Irian Jaya: Residents collecting trepang (sea slugs) have found the wreckage of two American war planes at the bottom of the sea off this town, Antara reported yesterday.

The wreckage, found this week near the Samate village, is believed to be that of two American planes that crashed into the sea during the second World War.

The wreckage is now home to various species of fish and local people are not interested in removing it, chief of the Samate village Soop Rumbewas said.

Semate was one of the Japanese occupation troops' bases in Irian Jaya. (pan)
