WPFD 2026 Produces Jayapura Declaration on Quality Press
Jayapura (ANTARA) - The World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) 2026, held in the city of Jayapura, Papua, resulted in the Jayapura Declaration on quality press for a peaceful and just future Indonesia. “There are at least two key elements in this declaration, namely commitments from all parties for the sustainability and freedom of the press at local and national levels,” said Sasmito, a member of the Publisher Rights Committee, at the closing of World Press Freedom Day 2026 in Jayapura on Tuesday. His side encourages the Jayapura Declaration to be followed up by relevant ministries and institutions, local governments, and press communities so that the sustainability and freedom of the press can be realised, thereby making Indonesia’s future peaceful and just. Publisher Rights Committee Chairman Suprapto called on all parties to continue monitoring so that the declaration does not stop after being read today. “What is more important is the commitment of stakeholders, including digital platforms, to implement the declaration. The press must also continue to monitor its implementation,” he said. Meanwhile, Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri stated that the press plays an important role as a conveyor of credible information, a strengthener of public literacy, and a guardian of development transparency. “This WPFD 2026 momentum aligns with the vision of the Papua Provincial Government, namely the transformation of a new, advanced, and harmonious Papua,” he said. He added that holding WPFD in Papua affirms that press freedom must be felt equally throughout Indonesia, including in Papua Province. “This is a manifestation of our commitment to democracy, openness, and information justice for all society,” he stated. His side invites all parties to continue strengthening journalistic professionalism and integrity, ensuring protection for journalists, and building harmonious collaboration between government, media, and society. The declaration was made by press practitioners, media leaders, government parties, academics, students, society, and pupils at the WPFD 2026 event in Jayapura.
