World crossers to compete here

JAKARTA (JP): Thirteen leading world competitors will stake their claims on victory in the fourth and final leg of the Lucky Strike International Motocross Championships at the Raffles Village track in Cibubur, East Jakarta, on Nov. 12 and Nov. 13.

Apart from Australian Jeff Leisk, runner up in the 1991 World Championship, and the winner of the 1994 Australian Championship Kim Ashkenazi, who will ride Suzuki and Yamaha bikes respectively, the other participating world crossers include four of the European top 10, Oscar Vromas (Honda), Jimmy Verbrugh (Yamaha), Peter Iven (Suzuki) and Alwin van Asten (Honda).

In addition, three New Zealand brothers and a crosser from Japan's Yamaha team, Kentaro Murahashi, will also compete, along with Indonesia's leading crossers Jhonny Pranata and Ronny Karno (Suzuki), Frans and Pieters Tanujaya (Yamaha) and Iwan Ciss Hermawan and Wilman Jess (Honda).

The championships offer a final-round cash prize totaling Rp 7.5 million (US$3,429) and an overall cash prize of US$8,000 for winners who have taken part in the championships since the first round. In addition, Indonesian crossers who collect the highest points in the senior and junior categories will get bonuses totaling Rp 15 million.

On Nov. 12, the championships will begin at 10 a.m. with motorbike scrutineering, briefing and some warming up before the participants start contesting the 125 cc international, the 125 cc junior and qualifying rounds for the first class.

On Nov. 13, the championships will begin at 9 a.m., contesting the 125 cc international and the 125 cc junior for the second and third class, grass track classes and the 250 cc international.

Up to now, 65 crossers have signed up. Registration will be closed on Friday, Nov. 11., the championships' organizer, the Jakarta chapter of the Indonesian Autosport Association, announced yesterday.

The first, second and third legs of the championships were held in Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and Lembang, West Java, from Aug. 27 to Aug. 29. (arf)
