GOVERNOR of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, accompanied by Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, visited Gelondong Gede Market in Tuban Regency on Friday (6 March). Upon arrival, the Vice President and his entourage were welcomed by Gelondong Gede Market Chief Sutadji and the head of UPTD Pengelolaan TPI Agus Saleh Setiawan. Thereafter, the Vice President, together with Governor Khofifah and the Tuban Regent, inspected the market area and interacted with the traders and the community at work. The inspection was conducted to ensure that staple stocks remain safeguarded and that prices of essential goods are affordable for the public ahead of Eid al-Fitr 2026, particularly fish as Indonesia’s main seafood commodity. During a dialogue with market traders, the Vice President issued directions to the local government to continue safeguarding food availability and keeping prices affordable for the public.

Separately, Governor Khofifah stated that the East Java Provincial Government is continuing its efforts to maintain the stability of supply and prices of staple goods in East Java. She noted that several actions are needed to keep price stabilisation and inflation under control, including ensuring stock availability, price affordability, distribution, and effective communication. Among these, she emphasised that effective communication is key to price control; if price volatility occurs for one commodity, other regions can assist in meeting stock needs. “This is in line with the Vice President’s request for local governments to strengthen coordination between the central government, provinces, and regions to ensure that people obtain adequate food supplies,” said Governor Khofifah.

Regarding fish availability, Governor Khofifah reported that the stock and price of fish in East Java are stable. This is based on data from the East Java Province Fisheries Service that in January 2026, farmed fish production reached 101,103.01 tonnes, captured fish production 44,320.51 tonnes, and fish stock at 52,167.52 tonnes. In February, farmed fish production was projected to reach 106,159.32 tonnes, captured fish production 36,654.74 tonnes, with stock of 48,576.47 tonnes. In March 2026, farmed fish production was projected to reach 108,159.32 tonnes, captured fish production 32,010.36 tonnes, with stock of 41,372.27 tonnes.

“Stock and price of fish are relatively stable in January–February 2026 and are expected to remain stable up to Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah,” said Governor Khofifah. She noted that, generally, ahead of Eid, demand tends to be normal without a spike, as people focus on other commodities such as chicken, eggs, or meat. “It will typically return to normal on H+1 or H+7 after the holiday,” she added.

Nevertheless, Governor Khofifah assured that price stability and distribution of staples and fish would continue to be monitored to ensure the needs of the public are met. Gelondong Gede Market itself is one of the centres of economic activity for Tuban’s coastal community, involving various local business actors. It is recorded that around 100 fishermen rely on economic activity in this area, along with about 60 vegetable traders and 80 fish traders who serve daily needs, and around 65 households live in the market vicinity.
