Portland cement is the most commonly used type of hydraulic cement in modern construction. It is called hydraulic because this material can harden and bind strongly when it reacts with water, producing a robust and durable substance.

This type of cement was first developed in 1824 by Joseph Aspdin, a stonemason from Leeds, England. He named his product “Portland” because its colour and texture when hardened resembled the limestone from the Isle of Portland, which at that time was renowned as a high-quality building material.

The raw materials are burned at approximately 1,450 degrees Celsius until they form clinker, which is then ground finely into powder known as cement.

Portland cement plays a crucial role in construction because of its strength, stability and ability to bond well with various materials. This material is the primary component in the production of concrete, mortar, plaster and precast elements used in both small and large-scale construction projects.

In practice, Portland cement is used to construct various structures requiring high strength, ranging from house foundations, columns and beams to multi-storey buildings. Additionally, this material is frequently used for structural repair work, such as filling cracks or reinforcing specific building sections.

There are several reasons why this type of cement has become the primary choice in the construction industry. Portland cement offers high strength, allowing structures to withstand significant loads and stress over extended periods, making it ideal for demanding applications such as foundations, columns, beams and high-rise buildings.
