JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The incident involving a Toyota Calya car driving against traffic and being attacked by a mob in the Gunung Sahari area, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (25/2/2026), is suspected to have originated from the use of fake license plates.

Central Jakarta Police Chief, Commissioner Reynold Hutagalung, said that the car with license plate number D 1640 AHB was initially stopped by traffic officers because it was suspected of using an incorrect license plate.

“The car with license plate number D 1640 AHB is suspected of using a fake license plate, so it was stopped by two traffic police officers on duty,” Reynold told reporters at the Tanah Abang Police Station on Wednesday evening.

“HM was afraid and fled, then entered Jalan Gunung Sahari and drove against traffic from south to north on Jalan Bungur Besar,” said Reynold.

The car then turned and continued to drive against the flow of traffic until it reached the Menara Bidakara Alfa Land (MBAL) intersection.

At that location, the vehicle turned around again and continued to drive in the opposite lane.

“At that point, the car was involved in an accident with a motorcycle,” said Reynold.

As a result of the incident, a woman from Cengkareng, West Jakarta, who was riding the motorcycle, suffered injuries.

The Toyota Calya car driven by HM was also damaged. The right side was dented and the rear window was broken.

Previously, a video of the car chase went viral on social media.

In the circulating recording, the black car is seen speeding through traffic while being pursued by citizens.

The rear window of the car appears to be broken after being hit with a helmet by several people.
