Why Depok City Government Has Banned Sahur on the Road
During Ramadan 1447 Hijriah (2026), the Depok City Government has issued a series of public advisories, including a prohibition on sahur on the road activities.
Deputy Mayor of Depok, Chandra Rahmansyah, conveyed the advisory to all residents to maintain public order, security, and comfort throughout Ramadan.
“First, all Depok City residents are not to carry out sahur on the road activities that have the potential to cause public disorder, traffic congestion, noise, or other actions that disturb the community,” said Chandra at the lobby of Depok City Hall on Wednesday, 18 February 2026.
Second, Chandra continued, residents are expected to hold sahur gatherings within their own neighbourhoods, such as at homes, mosques, prayer halls, or locations that have obtained permits from the relevant authorities.
“Third, communities, organisations, or civic groups wishing to conduct social activities during Ramadan should prioritise activities that are positive in nature and impact, such as distributing sahur meals or social aid, whilst maintaining order and complying with prevailing regulations,” said Chandra.
Fourth, parents are expected to supervise and guide their children to ensure they do not become involved in activities that could disrupt public security and order.
Finally, Chandra said, local officials together with the military and police will conduct monitoring and enforcement against activities that have the potential to disturb public peace and order.
“This advisory is conveyed for your attention and to be carried out with full responsibility. We express our gratitude for the cooperation of all Depok City residents,” said Chandra.
Chandra emphasised that activities during Ramadan must maintain a conducive and comfortable environment for the public. One activity that frequently causes concern is sahur on the road.
“So later, if there are convoys or sahur on the road processions, do not be angry if they are stopped or dispersed by the police or the Civil Service Police Unit, because we have already issued this advisory,” said Chandra.
Meanwhile, Depok Metro Police Chief Senior Commissioner Abdul Waras added that his officers, together with combined military and Civil Service Police Unit personnel, would conduct routine patrols throughout Ramadan.
“This is naturally linked to firm sanctions under existing regulations. This means that if there are criminal offences committed, we will impose sanctions in accordance with the offence,” said Abdul.
