White House: Donald Trump and Xi Jinping to Meet in Beijing on 14-15 May
US President Donald Trump will hold a “long-awaited” meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on 14-15 May, according to the White House on Wednesday (25/3). Trump’s visit to China, the first since returning to office in January 2025, was originally scheduled for 31 March to 2 April. However, the visit was postponed due to his desire to remain in the United States and focus on the recently started war with Iran. White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, who announced the new visit dates, also stated during a press conference that Trump and his wife, Melania, will host Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, in a reciprocal visit to Washington on a date to be announced this year. Shortly after the announcement, Trump confirmed on social media that he will meet with Xi Jinping over two days. “Our representatives are finalising preparations for this historic visit. I am very much looking forward to spending time with President Xi in what I am sure will be a monumental event,” Trump wrote. “So, you can count on it. I know President (Donald Trump) hopes to go to China on 14 and 15 May,” Leavitt said. Since agreeing to a one-year truce with Xi Jinping in the US-China trade war in October 2025, Trump has stated that the two have made progress in economic matters and placed their relationship on a more stable footing. The main topics to be discussed at the summit include trade and Taiwan, as well as additional purchases of US agricultural products by China, which Trump seeks to secure ahead of the upcoming midterm elections in November.
