The latest developments in United States-Iran relations continue to attract international attention. Diplomatic efforts persist amid a conflict that has not fully subsided.

One step that has drawn particular focus is the direct involvement of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law in a mission to Pakistan. The country is now a key point in efforts to bring the two sides together.

US Envoy and Trump’s Son-in-Law Depart for Pakistan

The White House has confirmed the dispatch of a special envoy to Pakistan to open communication channels with Iran. Steve Witkoff, along with Jared Kushner, reportedly departed on Saturday morning (25/4/2026) to carry out the mission.

“The Iranians want to talk,” said White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt. She also noted that US Vice President JD Vance is “on standby” to join if the negotiations show positive progress.

Leavitt emphasised that this step was taken at the decision of President Donald Trump, who wishes to open opportunities for dialogue. She stated that Trump is “always willing to give diplomacy a chance” and revealed progress from the Iranian side in recent days.

Iran Insists No Direct Meeting

On the other hand, Iran has given differing signals regarding the meeting. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in Islamabad, but not to meet directly with the US delegation.

“No meeting is planned between Iran and the US,” asserted spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei. He added, “Iran’s observations will be conveyed to Pakistan.”

According to official statements, Araghchi is scheduled to meet with senior Pakistani officials. This meeting is part of Islamabad’s mediation efforts to de-escalate tensions and reopen opportunities for peaceful negotiations between Iran and the US.

Pakistan as Mediator Amid Stalemate

Pakistan is playing a crucial role as a mediator in this conflict. Discussions taking place in Islamabad are said to aim at reviving negotiations that previously failed to reach an agreement.

Several Pakistani government sources indicate that the Iranian delegation’s visit will focus on conveying Tehran’s proposals to Washington through mediation channels. This effort is a continuation of initial negotiations held in mid-April.

This situation unfolds amid a ceasefire extended unilaterally by Trump. However, tensions remain palpable, particularly regarding the naval blockade and strategic issues in the region.

Trump Awaits Offer from Iran

US President Donald Trump has expressed hope that Iran will submit an offer that meets Washington’s interests. This statement comes amid uncertainty about the direction of further negotiations.

“They (Iran) are making an offer and we have to see it,” Trump said in an interview with Reuters on Friday (24/4) local time. He added, “I don’t want to say that, but we are dealing with responsible people now.”

Trump acknowledged that he does not yet know the contents of Iran’s proposal. He affirmed that he will consider next steps after reviewing the offer, including regarding the blockade policy that remains in place.

Kushner’s involvement in this mission marks a new intensity in US diplomatic efforts. Although statements from both sides still show differing stances, the open communication channel offers hope for reaching an agreement in the future.
