When Should You Upgrade Your Motorcycle Battery? Expert Advice

JAKARTA – Upgrading a motorcycle battery is not merely about style or following tech trends. In certain situations, switching from a conventional battery to a lithium one can be a solution for riders experiencing frequent electrical issues.

Lithium batteries are increasingly favoured for their longer lifespan and more stable power supply compared to conventional ones. This technology is also being considered by daily riders and modified bikes with higher electrical demands. So when exactly should a motorcycle upgrade its battery?

Conventional batteries use lead plates and electrolyte fluid, with an average lifespan of two to three years depending on usage and maintenance. However, as they age, conventional batteries commonly face issues such as corroded or oxidised terminals, indicated by white powder on the battery terminals.

Rendra Pramono, Head of Engineering at Dharma Group, said a key advantage of lithium batteries is their longer lifespan. “The most important factor is the lifespan. Lithium batteries can last up to five years, with a two-year warranty,” Rendra told Kompas.com on Monday, 25 May 2026.

This makes lithium batteries a long-term investment for high-mobility riders or those seeking minimal maintenance. This is particularly important for motorcycles with additional accessories like extra lights, USB chargers, audio systems, or heavily modified bikes with numerous electronic components.

Moreover, lithium batteries differ in construction from conventional ones. Brass terminals reduce corrosion risk, while terminals embedded in the plastic casing help prevent leaks and loose connections caused by motorcycle vibrations.

However, battery upgrades should align with specific needs. For standard daily motorcycles with normal usage, conventional batteries remain adequate. However, if the motorcycle frequently experiences electrical issues, the battery has exceeded its lifespan, or power demands have increased due to additional accessories, switching to a lithium battery may be a viable option.
