When Should You Pump Out a Septic Tank?

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Septic tanks must be pumped regularly to ensure household sanitation systems function properly. Subekti, a supervisor at the Domestic Wastewater Management Association (Forkalim), stated that the ideal time for pumping septic tanks is every three years. ‘Ideal is every three years,’ Subekti told Kompas.com on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. However, septic tanks not pumped for a decade should be suspected of leaks, as this indicates potential seepage. ‘If it hasn’t been pumped for 10 or even 15 years, it’s likely leaking,’ Subekti added. Therefore, pumping septic tanks is a crucial part of maintaining household wastewater disposal systems. The pumping schedule is typically influenced by tank capacity, household size, and daily water usage intensity. Tank size is a critical factor in household sanitation systems. If the septic tank capacity is too small, it fills up faster, risking blocked drainage pipes and unpleasant odours. When planning, septic tank capacity must account for the number of residents; more occupants mean a larger waste volume to process. For small households, septic tanks typically hold 1 to 2 cubic metres, though capacity can increase based on resident numbers and water usage needs. The retention time of waste in the tank is also crucial; better sedimentation allows for more effective waste breakdown before it enters the absorption system. In addition to installation distance, septic tanks must be built watertight to prevent leakage into the soil. Walls and bases should be robustly designed to withstand seepage.
