When Rubbish "Takes Over" Duren Village in Tangerang
TANGERANG, KOMPAS.com – Piles of rubbish snake across an empty plot in Duren Village Complex, Pedurenan, Karang Tengah, Tangerang City, since the first day of Eid 2026.
The uncollected household waste is causing a pungent odour extending dozens of metres and triggering the appearance of maggots around the area.
This situation not only disrupts residents’ comfort but also raises concerns, particularly when rain falls, which exacerbates the smell and causes leachate puddles around the site.
Based on Kompas.com’s observations at the location on Thursday (26/3/2026), the rubbish fills an empty plot approximately 5x10 metres in size.
The piles even spill over to the right side of the road for about 10 metres.
The pungent smell can be detected up to around 50 metres from the site. The closer one gets, the stronger the rotten aroma, especially from the wet rubbish that has begun to decompose.
Additionally, maggots can be seen developing in several parts of the rubbish piles.
Blackish leachate water is also pooling around the area, making the ground muddy, slippery, and dirty.
A Madurese stall keeper nearby, Ronal (24), said the rubbish piles started appearing on the first day of Eid and have not been cleared for several days.
“Since yesterday, no one has cleaned it, so rubbish from everywhere is piling up here,” said Ronal when met by Kompas.com at the site on Thursday.
However, during the Eid holiday period, waste collection activities are suspected to have stopped.
“This seems to be after Eid; maybe the officers are on holiday, so it’s piling up,” he said.
