When Nyepi's Silence Meets the Echo of Takbir: A Beautiful Portrait of Tolerance in Bali

The year 2026 will mark a special historical note for interfaith harmony in Indonesia, particularly in Bali. According to the astronomical calendar and the determination of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership, the takbiran night leading up to Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah falls on 19 March 2026. This date coincides exactly with Nyepi, the Saka New Year celebration in 1948.

The convergence of these two major moments—the total silence of Nyepi and the exuberance of Takbiran Night—serves as both a test and tangible proof of the strength of tolerance’s roots on the Island of the Gods. Amid the quietude of the Catur Brata Penyepian, Muslims in Bali will still celebrate victory in a highly solemn manner, full of respect for local traditions.

For Muhammadiyah members in Bali, this year’s takbiran will be conducted with special protocols. Based on appeals from the Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership (PWM) Bali and the Interfaith Harmony Forum (FKUB), the takbiran will take place without using outdoor loudspeakers and without vehicle convoys.

The echoes of takbir will be performed inside mosques or individual homes with limited volume. This is done to preserve the solemnity of Hindus observing Amati Geni (refraining from lighting fires or lights) and Amati Lelanguan (refraining from entertainment).

To ensure both forms of worship proceed side by side without friction, relevant authorities in Bali have established several points of agreement.

This phenomenon is more than a mere calendar coincidence; it is a strong message about religious moderation. Nyepi teaches humans to engage in self-introspection in silence, while Takbiran is an expression of gratitude for victory over base desires. Both carry the same spiritual essence: self-control.

Eid al-Fitr prayer in 2026 will fall on 20 March, immediately after Nyepi ends at 06:00 WITA. The Eid prayer can still be performed normally in fields or mosques after that time.

Pecalang will continue to maintain the environment in accordance with customary rules, while Muslim religious leaders ensure congregations adhere to the joint agreements regarding sound volume and light usage.

All markets, shops, and malls in Bali will close completely during Nyepi. Residents are urged to complete Eid al-Fitr shopping needs at most two days before Nyepi begins.
