When is Nyepi 2026? Note the Saka year and schedule
Nyepi is a moment awaited by Hindus each year. The festival marks the Saka New Year, the calendar system used in Hindu tradition, and thus is observed annually.
Nyepi is etymologically derived from the Balinese word ‘Sepi’, meaning silent or calm. This means that during Nyepi no activities are undertaken, other than staying at home or at a sacred place in quiet (tenang), mindful (eling or ingat), and vigilant (waspada) to achieve inner peace.
In practice, this period of stillness lasts 24 hours, a full day starting from 06:00 in the morning. On that day, life proceeds without fire, electricity, or sound. The only activities are the Tapa Brata Yoga Samadhi for self-reflection and worship.
This is intended to purify the self (Bhuana Alit) and the universe (Bhuana Agung) from past wrongs and to release attachments to worldly life, in order to welcome the Saka New Year with a clean, calm, balanced heart and to strengthen the spiritual relationship with the Creator.
Kapan Hari Raya Nyepi 2026?
According to the Joint Ministerial Decree (SKB) No. 1497 of 2025 and No. 2 of 2025 on National Holidays and Leave for 2026, the government sets Nyepi 2026, the Saka New Year 1948, as Thursday, 19 March 2026.
Previously, it has been noted that Nyepi lasts 24 hours from 06:00 in the morning. This means the holy day ends at 06:00 on the following morning.
If one follows this, Nyepi 2026 will last for two days, starting on Thursday 19 March 2026 from 06:00 in the morning, and ending on Friday 20 March 2026 at the same time, 06:00.

Rangkaian Kegiatan Hari Raya Nyepi
Citing the document ‘Analisis Makna Hari Raya Nyepi’ by I Ketut Atmaja Johny Artha, there are a number of rituals and worship activities performed by Hindus before and after Nyepi, including the following:
- Upacara Melasti
Melasti is performed two days before Nyepi; Hindus perform prayers at the sea or a lake. The sequence of events includes the purification of sacred objects originating from temples (Pura). In Hindu belief, the sea and lakes are regarded as sources of holy water believed to cleanse impurities both within people and in the universe.
- Tawur Kesanga
Tawur Kesanga is performed one day after Melasti or exactly one day before Nyepi. That day is also known as Tilem Sasih Kasanga. During Tawur Kesanga, Hindus prepare various offerings (sesajen or caru) at home as part of the ceremony.
- Pengrupukan or Mecaru
Pengrupukan is performed together with Tawur Kesanga. In this procession, Hindus scatter Tawur rice around the house while beating kettle drums to produce a noisy sound. The Pengrupukan tradition is meant as an effort to drive away Buta Kala believed to dwell near Hindu residences. In Bali, the Pengrupukan ceremony is usually accompanied by an ogoh-ogoh parade depicting Buta Kala as a symbol of human vice.
- Nyepi
After these ceremonies, Hindus enter the pinnacle of Nyepi. For a full day, Hindus do not engage in ordinary activities. On this day they are not allowed to light fires, travel, or undertake any activities. The peak of Nyepi is observed in a period of stillness.
This silence serves as a means of self-reflection and purification by letting go of worldly attachments. Additionally, for Hindus who are able, fasting for 24 hours, performing tapa, yoga, or samadhi is encouraged to contemplate sins and prepare to welcome the Saka New Year.
