What Is the ISF? Indonesia Becomes Deputy Commander and Deploys 8,000 Troops to Gaza
Indonesia has agreed to serve as deputy commander of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) newly established in Gaza. The announcement was made during the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace (BoP).
ISF Commander Major General Jasper Jeffers delivered the news, confirming that Indonesia had accepted the offer to serve as ISF Deputy Commander.
"I have offered and Indonesia has accepted the position of deputy commander for the ISF," Jeffers said, as reported by AFP on Friday (20 February 2026).
Jeffers affirmed that the ISF's presence would ensure security in Gaza, enabling lasting peace to be achieved.
"With these initial steps, we will help bring the security that Gaza needs for future prosperity and lasting peace," Jeffers said.
He added that the ISF would focus on stabilising conditions in Gaza to enable civilian governance to function. The ISF has been mandated to oversee the ceasefire and security stability, not confrontation.
**What Is the ISF?**
According to the United Nations website, the formation of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) is based on UN Security Council Resolution 2803, adopted on 17 November 2025. The resolution supports the "Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict", welcomes the establishment of the Board of Peace (BoP), and authorises the BoP to form a temporary International Stabilisation Force in Gaza.
Under the resolution, the ISF will operate under the Board of Peace, with troops contributed by participating nations.
**ISF Mandate**
The ISF will work in cooperation with Israel and Egypt, without prejudice to existing agreements, together with newly trained and vetted Palestinian police forces, to:
- Assist in securing border areas;
- Stabilise the security environment in Gaza by ensuring the demilitarisation of the Gaza Strip, including the destruction and prevention of reconstruction of military, terror, and offensive infrastructure, as well as the permanent disarmament of non-state armed groups;
- Protect civilians, including humanitarian operations;
- Train and provide support to vetted Palestinian police forces;
- Coordinate with relevant nations to secure humanitarian corridors; and
- Carry out additional tasks as may be required to support the Comprehensive Plan.
**Indonesia to Deploy 8,000 TNI Troops to Support ISF**
President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia would send 8,000 TNI troops to Gaza, Palestine. The forces would be deployed within one to two months.
"Perhaps not long, another one to two months," President Prabowo said in response to reporters' questions after the inaugural Gaza Board of Peace Summit in Washington DC, United States, on Thursday (19 February) local time.
The 8,000 TNI troops will serve alongside the International Stabilisation Force (ISF), whose members comprise forces from Board of Peace member nations. Prabowo also indicated that an advance team may be sent to Gaza ahead of the main deployment.
At the inaugural Board of Peace Summit held at the Donald J Trump Institute of Peace in Washington DC on Thursday (19 February) morning local time, Prabowo affirmed that Indonesia would send 8,000 TNI soldiers to serve with the ISF in Gaza, Palestine.
"The ceasefire in Gaza is a real achievement. We commend this achievement and therefore reaffirm our commitment to contribute by sending our soldiers in a significant number of 8,000, and potentially more if needed," Prabowo said during his address at the Board of Peace Summit.
