WFP,TNT fight malnutrition through walk

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

More than 1,500 people took part in the Fight Hunger-Walk the World 2005 held on Sunday by the World Food Program (WFP) and multinational logistics company TNT, to raise Rp 250 million to fight hunger and malnutrition in Indonesia.

The walk, which was held at Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., was part of a global walk carried out on the same day in over 200 cities in 90 countries.

The participants, many of whom were WFP and TNT staff members and their families, paid Rp 20,000 (US$2.1) as a contribution toward the WFP's Global School Feeding Campaign.

The campaign aims to provide children with hygienically prepared meals through their schools, to encourage them to keep studying.

Today, the campaign has reached 400,000 children across the country, including those who survived the tsunami and earthquakes in Aceh and North Sumatra provinces.

The walk was first held in 2003 in 10 Asian countries, including at the Great Wall of China.

Last year's Walk the World involved participants from 72 countries.

This year, it is hoped that over US$2.5 million can be raised for the Global School Feeding campaign. (006)
