West Sumatra Deputy Governor Vasco Responds to Abu Janda's 'Barbar' Remarks
West Sumatra Deputy Governor Vasco Ruseimy has addressed comments made by social media activist Abu Janda, who linked West Sumatra and West Java to ‘barbaric’ behaviour. In an Instagram post on Saturday (30 May), Vasco stated that such remarks are not only incorrect but also oversimplify a civilisation built on values, customs, and a long history. He explained that West Sumatra upholds the philosophy ‘Adat basandi syarak, syarak basandi kitabullah’ (customs based on Islamic law, which is based on the Quran), with its people valuing ethics, consultation, and balance between tradition and religion. Labeling the Minangkabau community as barbaric ignores the fact that the region has produced many national leaders and figures. ‘From the tradition of migration teaching independence to customary systems that prioritise consultation, all demonstrate social maturity that cannot be overlooked,’ he said. Vasco urged the public to respond calmly, noting that excessive reactions could amplify an issue that may not have significant impact. ‘Especially if certain parties are deliberately seeking attention through the commotion,’ he added. He stressed that a measured response would show West Sumatra is not as portrayed, but rather more refined, deeply rooted in values, and capable of responding with dignity. ‘It is absurd for a region rich in customs, culture, and values to be judged with casual words,’ Vasco said. ‘Sometimes what appears “barbaric” is not due to the object itself, but because of skewed and cracked spectacles—let alone thinking West Sumatra is barbaric.’ Abu Janda, also known as Permadi Arya, has been reported to police by the Minangkabau Family Association (IKM) for alleged hate speech based on ethnicity and religion (SARA). The report, registered under police case number LP/B/230/V/2026/SPKT/Bareskrim Polri dated 26 May 2026, accuses him of violating Article 242 of Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code regarding spreading information that incites hatred against specific groups. Abu Janda has denied insulting West Sumatra’s people, stating, ‘I did not insult the people of West Sumatra,’ during a CNN Indonesia interview on Wednesday (27 May).
