The decision by West Kalimantan Governor Ria Norsan to seek treatment for her vertigo in Kuching, Malaysia, has attracted significant attention. This step is viewed as contradictory to her own appeals for people to receive medical care within the region.

“Public officials must be more sensitive to the conditions of their area and its people; they should not live extravagantly,” stressed Hari Purwanto, Executive Director of the People’s Democracy Study (SDR), on Tuesday (7 April).

Previously, Norsan was known to have travelled to Malaysia on 3 April 2026. She explained that the visit was for a medical check-up following health issues related to vertigo. “It was just a check-up. Because I recently suffered from vertigo, probably due to lack of rest,” Norsan stated.

She also emphasised that the trip was brief and took place during a holiday. “I went on a holiday and returned the same day,” she said. According to Norsan, her condition has now improved, and she has resumed government activities.

LEGAL ISSUES

The scrutiny of the trip is inseparable from the concurrent legal issues unfolding. Norsan’s name had previously been linked to an examination by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in an alleged corruption case involving a road project in Mempawah Regency.

Norsan denied any summons coinciding with her departure. “There was no call from the KPK on that date,” she claimed.

Nevertheless, the overseas travel in such circumstances is seen as intensifying public attention, particularly amid developing examination issues.

Hari Purwanto asserted that, in this context, the presence of public officials in legal processes cannot be ignored. “If an official skips a KPK summons, it is a mockery of the law. Claims of illness are just a camouflage, like the phrase ‘if you’re clean, why be uneasy’,” he said.

He also assessed that deciding to travel abroad in such a situation is difficult to detach from public judgement on propriety. “If the region is not yet advanced, don’t go gallivanting abroad, especially if under KPK examination or facing legal problems,” he stated.

CONTRADICTORY

This action has also drawn attention amid the central government’s push for the public to utilise domestic healthcare services. President Joko Widodo had previously emphasised the importance of curbing foreign exchange outflows due to the high number of citizens seeking treatment overseas.

On the other hand, Norsan is known to have previously urged the public not to seek treatment abroad. The discrepancy between that appeal and her current action has become part of the public scrutiny.

STRENGTHENING PUBLIC REACTION

Beyond health and legal contexts, public responses to Norsan’s leadership have also intensified in recent times. Some residents assess that the West Kalimantan Governor has relatively frequently undertaken overseas trips during her tenure, while regional development progress is deemed not to show significant advancement. Infrastructure conditions, including damaged roads in several areas, remain a recurring complaint.

Additionally, the use of a personal vehicle worth billions of rupiah has attracted attention. Amid uneven infrastructure conditions, this is viewed by some as lacking reflection of sensitivity to regional needs.

These perceptions have developed in public spaces and strengthened scrutiny of every decision made, including the overseas trip undertaken in the current situation.
