West Jakarta Builds 1,000-Metre Drainage Channel to Combat Flooding at Puri Kembangan
Jakarta — The West Jakarta city administration will construct a 1,050-metre drainage channel to address flooding at the Puri Kembangan intersection, specifically beneath the Jakarta Outer Ring Road West 1 (JORR W) tollway.
Imron Syahrin, Assistant for Economy and Development at the West Jakarta City Secretariat (Setko), stated that the channel construction represents an alternative measure whilst awaiting the normalisation process of the Angke River.
“We are building a channel with dimensions of 1.6 metres by 1.6 metres spanning 1,050 metres, beginning from beneath the JORR W1 tollway through to the banks of the Angke River,” Imron said when contacted in Jakarta on Thursday.
Imron explained that the channel construction would be undertaken in cooperation with several private companies.
“This is being done because according to calculations by the Water Resources Sub-office, the current available budget is only sufficient to build a 350-metre channel, including the construction of a stilling basin and a pump house,” he stated.
He therefore appealed for support from property developers to resolve the waterlogging and traffic congestion issues in the Puri area.
Meanwhile, Joko, a representative from the developer side, welcomed the proposed channel construction plan. However, his organisation requested that normalisation of the Angke River be accelerated by the Ministry of Public Works (PU).
“If the main channel is completed, then the supporting channels beneath it will function more effectively,” he said.
