Tapsel, North Sumatra (ANTARA) — Flash flood victims in Huta Godang village, South Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra, celebrated the month of Ramadan by slaughtering cattle for communal distribution and consumption.

"The cattle slaughter provided by the government is to welcome the holy month of Ramadan," said Huta Godang village head Adamal Tampubolon in Batang Toru subdistrict, South Tapanuli, on Tuesday.

To mark the arrival of Ramadan, he continued, the North Sumatra provincial government donated four cattle to be distributed among all residents affected by the flash floods.

Adamal explained that all residents, whether Muslim, Christian or of other faiths, would receive meat, particularly given the hardship they are currently enduring due to the disaster.

"This meat is not just for Muslims — Christian residents also receive their share. We distribute it equally," he said.

He added that according to family registration cards, Huta Godang village has 500 registered households, comprising 350 Muslim households and 150 Christian households.

One resident, Intan Silalahi, expressed her gratitude at receiving beef from the government, as it meant they could enjoy a proper meal for the pre-dawn sahur meal.

"This is for sahur later. Even though we're in an evacuation shelter with only basic provisions, at least we can cook meat," she said.
