JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Calls for Indonesia to withdraw from the Board of Peace (BoP) intensified following the US and Israel’s military attack on Iran in late February 2026. The appeal came from a number of parliamentarians and cross-religious organisations who argue that Indonesia’s membership of BoP could injure the principle of an independent and active foreign policy. The attack on Tehran on Saturday, 28 February 2026, was reported to have occurred near the office of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Several US officials said Washington was involved in the operation. Tasnim and Fars news agencies later confirmed Khamenei’s death. Member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, TB Hasanuddin, urged the government to withdraw from BoP immediately. He argued that Indonesia’s participation in BoP has harmed the principle of free and active foreign policy as mandated by the constitution because the organisation allows aggression against other nations. ‘The mandate to actively contribute to world peace is not reflected if Indonesia is part of an organisation that is seen to allow aggression by another nation — in this case, the US-Israel invasion of Iran,’ Hasanuddin told Kompas.com on Tuesday, 3 March 2026. The PDI-P politician stressed that withdrawal does not mean Indonesia ignores global peace issues. ‘Nor does it mean siding against peace and respect for the sovereignty of every nation,’ Hasanuddin said. Hasanuddin fears that remaining in BoP could pose bigger problems and damage Indonesia’s foreign policy integrity in the eyes of the world. ‘Rather than allowing this to drag on and risk greater problems, the government should promptly take steps to withdraw. This is important to safeguard the consistency of the free and active principle that is the mandate of our constitution,’ he said. He also noted that Indonesia’s involvement in BoP, established by US President Donald Trump, makes the government appear tepid in condemning the invasion.
